August 14, 2020
To mitigate the risk of COVID-19 and provide a campus that is safe for staff and students to work and learn together, Empower College Prep has developed the Mitigation Plan linked HERE.
August 13, 2020
Plan to provide free, on-site learning opportunities and support
Beginning Monday, August 17th, we will begin providing on-site services for families who have expressed the need for it. Distance learning will also continue and is recommended while our surrounding community still has a large number of COVID-19 cases. All instruction will be based on the same curriculum and be measured using the same assessments.
On-site services will include the following during normal school hours, in addition to adult supervision provided by Empower staff, Internet connectivity, free breakfast and lunch, and free transportation to and from school. Normal school hours are the same as the 2019-2020 school year, which are 7:40am-2:26pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and 7:40am-12:05pm Thursday for the high school and 8am-3:10pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and 8am-1:10pm Thursday for the elementary school.
- Students in grades K-3 will receive instruction from their classroom teacher with only students receiving onsite services, separate from students participating in distance learning.
- Students in grades 4-12 will receive instruction from the same classroom teacher as students who are participating in distance learning and will interact with both through Zoom.
- For students in grades 4-8, this will occur in the gym with Empower staff providing supervision and technology support.
- For students in grades 9-12, this will occur in classrooms following the students’ same schedule.
Students with Special Needs and English Learners
For students with special needs and English Learners, Empower College Prep’s ELL interventionists, Learning Specialists, Special Education teachers, and support staff will be available both onsite and online to work with students in small groups and 1-1 in classrooms, the gym, or through Zoom break-out rooms, based on the defined needs of students.
Additional Services
For students with counseling needs and families with other needs, Empower College Prep’s Social Worker, Family/Community Liaison, and Counseling staff are available both onsite and online to support students and families to get their diverse needs met, especially during this time.
Signing Up
To ensure adequate space for social distancing, parents have been signing up for this option by calling the school since mid-July. If you have not called the school to sign up for on-site services, this is required in order to ensure adequate space. Please contact the school at 602-283-5720.
Empower takes the safety and welfare of our employees and students seriously. We are taking the following precautions to keep our campus safe:
- Classes will be reduced in size to accommodate social distancing.
- Masks covering the nose and mouth will be REQUIRED when on campus and in communal spaces (hallways, courtyard) and when social distancing is not doable (office setting with more than one person, etc.). Empower has purchased face masks for all students and staff. Students and staff may bring their own face masks from home or wear the ones provided by Empower.
- Extensive and more frequent cleaning and sanitizing will occur.
- Students will be seated with social distancing requirements six (6) feet apart. K-2 classes will have table top barriers.
- No-touch thermometers will be used at bus stops and prior to anyone entering the campus. All teachers will be equipped with a no-touch thermometer. Please check your children’s temperature at home before sending them to school. Students with a fever will not be allowed to enter campus or the school bus.
- Hand sanitizer will be provided and present at many locations throughout the campus.
- We will be revising and increasing the sanitation schedule. Air filters have been changed to MERV 13, which are the among the highest quality filters for improved air quality.
We would also like to share with you the process Empower College Prep will take should a student test positive for COVID-19, experience symptoms of COVID-19, or be exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.
- If a student who has been on campus tests positive, an automated phone call will be sent to families with a student in the same school (Elementary or High School). The grade level of the student will be included. Following the automated phone call, Contact Tracing will be completed and any parents of individuals identified will be notified within 24 hours of our knowledge. The student who tests positive will need to quarantine off campus and be moved to distance learning until they meet CDC guidelines to return.
- If a student experiences symptoms of COVID-19, Contact Tracing will be completed and any individuals identified will be notified within 24 hours of our knowledge. The student will need to quarantine off campus and be moved to distance learning until they meet CDC guidelines to return.
- If a student is exposed to an individual who tested positive of COVID-19, the student will need to be quarantined off campus and be moved to distance learning until they meet CDC guidelines to return.
- If a staff member at your child’s school tests positive, a Robocall will be sent to families. Following the Robocall, Contact Tracing will be completed and any individuals identified will be notified within 24 hours of our knowledge. The staff member who tested positive will need to be quarantined off campus and follow CDC guidelines to return.
To clarify, you and your family will be notified by an automated phone call if anyone in your child’s school tests positive for COVID-19 and your family will receive a personal phone call if your child comes into contact with anyone who either shows symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19.
As this virus progresses and changes, our processes may as well. We are dedicated to keeping our families as informed as possible by remaining transparent and providing clear and quick communication.
If you have any specific questions, please contact our Family and Community Coordinator at familysupport@empowercollegeprep.org or 602-283-5720 ext. 1011.

Executive Order may be extended, and COVID-19 may cause us to need to return to distance learning. This year, we will be prepared!
Our teachers returned on July 20th to begin training for these live, interactive learning opportunities for students to engage with each other and their teachers in rigorous, safe, college-preparatory learning
experiences. We are still celebrating our first graduating class heading off to college, and we are equally excited to begin this new journey with our Kindergarten – 12th grade students on August 3rd!
As you have questions, please reach out to us at 602-283-5720. We are also hosting a virtual Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, August 6th at 5pm.
We ask that you work closely with us as we seek to ensure safety and transformational learning experiences this year so that our students are prepared to succeed in college, solve real-world problems, and maximize their impact in the world.
Sincerely,
Brian Holman

Atentamente,
Brian Holman

Dear Empower Families,
The 2020-2021 school year is almost here and we are excited to get started! We have been working around the clock to reimagine what a great education experience looks like. One of the first things and most important events we’ve reimagined for you is Registration Roundup (called “Orientation” in previous years).
Registration Roundup will be held on Monday, July 27 and Thursday, 30 from 8am-5pm. Each grade level will be assigned a specific time in order to avoid traffic delays. This event is a no contact DRIVE THRU (or walk up if you do not have a vehicle) event. For community’s safety, please stay in your vehicle and wear a mask at all times during the event. Empower staff members will be wearing masks and maintaining appropriate physical distancing as well.
Please join us at your student’s scheduled time, on either of the following days:
Monday, July 27
8am-10am: Kinder- 2nd grade
10am-12pm: 3rd- 5th grade
12pm-2pm: 6-8th grade
2pm-4pm: 9th- 12 grade
4pm-5pm: Open to any grade
Thursday, July 30
10am-12pm: Kinder- 2nd grade
12pm-2pm: 3rd- 5th grade
2pm-4pm: 6-8th grade
4pm-6pm: 9th- 12 grade
6pm-7pm: Open to any grade
NOTE: If you have students in multiple grade levels, come at the time of your OLDEST child.
Enclosed with this letter you will find several documents. Please fill them out BEFORE you come to the event. This will help the flow of traffic.
What to expect at this event:
- Enter through the WEST (near the highway) gate.
- Follow the drive around back and be greeted by an Empower staff member.
- Empower staff will review the enclosed documents for completion
- You will proceed to the next station to get your class schedule, pick up your school-issued laptop, get brief information on how to login the week of August 3rd.
- K-8: Get a uniform shirt
- Staff will also be available for you to get answers to your questions.
Family involvement is vital to student success, this year more than ever. Please come to school during the times listed above so your student will be ready to have a great start on August 3rd. Please note that teachers are in training and will NOT be available to meet you. You will meet teachers virtually the week of August 3rd.
We look forward to seeing you!

Estimadas familias,
¡No podemos esperar a verlos!

Empower Families,
As we enter our last week of the school year, we want to congratulate you on your perseverance, especially these past 2 months. We have received several questions about summer school and are calling to address these questions.
Consistent with Gov. Ducey’s direction to gradually and safely open in compliance with federal guidelines, we will be having summer school for only grades 9-12 by invitation based on students’ needs. Those who participate will be required to follow federal guidelines for safety. The elementary team is not providing summer school in order to focus fully on opening grades K-2 in August. If you have additional questions about summer school, please contact the school at 602-283-5720.
Have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Laptop turn in will from Friday, May 29th, Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2. Please turn in your computers and chargers during one of the following dates and times:

Any laptop not submitted by June 2 will be considered lost or stolen and the family will be invoiced for the price of the laptop. Again, we know that scholars have taken great care of the computers and expect to see 100% of our laptops returned in great condition for future use.
We are very proud and happy that we were able to provide laptops to all scholars for distance learning. We wish you a spectacular summer!

P-EBT Cards
Benefits will first be distributed to the majority of existing eligible Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households this week via their existing accounts. DES will also coordinate with the Arizona Department of Education to identify eligible households who do not already participate in SNAP; those households will receive Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards with benefits beginning in early May. For families whose children participated in the free or reduced-price school lunch program, but have not received a notification, DES will create a web application for them to submit their information to the Department for processing. The benefits will be retroactive to March 16, 2020, and are calculated based on the number of school days for which the child would have received assistance from school meal programs. Eligible families will receive $69 for March, $126 in April, and $120 in May, for each child. Families that have been accessing meals from schools during the closure are still eligible for these benefits.

Dear Families,
As you may have heard, Governor Ducey and The Arizona Department of Education’s Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman have extended school closure through April 10. Here is the information on the Governor’s website: https://azgovernor.gov/
This means we will begin official distance learning on March 30, 2020. We ask for your grace, flexibility, and cooperation as we work to keep your students connected to learning while being physically away from them. We are excited to continue our work with you; and we appreciate your support!
In order to make distance learning happen, we hope that every child will have or obtain a computer. Most high school students already have their Empower-issued computer. All other high school students as well as ALL STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-8 may pick up a loaner laptop beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at the following times:
It is expected that you treat the Empower laptop with the utmost respect and stewardship and return it in the best condition with no damage. Please do everything you can to take care of the computers while they are in your possession.
At your laptop pick up, you will be given information at that time how to set up discounted internet in your home if you are not already connected. Please communicate with us if you are unable to obtain internet for any reason and we will provide you with other options for distance learning.
Your teachers will be in contact with you soon with specific assignments as well as how to contact them while learning away from campus.
As a reminder, meals can be picked up Monday – Friday between 8 AM – 12 PM at 2411 W. Colter St., Phoenix, AZ 85015. We offer breakfast and lunch to all children ages birth to 18 years old. Families will be able to pick up two meals at a time each day per child. Children must be present to receive a meal. Adult meals are not available. Families do not need to register for meals and there are no income requirements.
As we partner together during this unprecedented time, remember that we are happy to answer your questions and want to help in any way we can. Please call the school at 602-283-5720 and leave a message. We are checking it and will respond within 24 hours on school days.

March 15, 2020
On March 15, 2020 Governor Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Education announced the closure of Arizona schools until at least March 27, 2020. Empower College Prep will be closed at a minimum through March 27.
We ask that during this time you abide by the health department’s guidelines of social distancing, which means adults and children alike should remain in their homes rather than in gatherings such as parties or play dates. This will help to slow the spread of the virus.
We will continue to post updates as information becomes available. Thank you, and stay healthy!
