EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Empower College Prep is founded on the core conviction that every child is created for a purpose and has the ability to comprehend abundant and complex information; to engage in analytical, creative, evaluative thought; and to communicate conclusions and beliefs in a clear and compelling manner. Empower College Prep exists to empower each child to discover and fulfill his or her purpose.

Empower College Prep combines a variety of instructional approaches. Highly effective instructors incorporate technology to enhance and differentiate scholar learning. Inquiry and constructivist methods are  used to help scholars deeply understand and apply new concepts, and traditional methods are used to build long-term mastery and fluent application of core academic skills.

WHAT SCHOLARS WILL ACHIEVE

Empower College Prep scholars graduate with three items in addition to their high school diploma:

1. An acceptance letter to a university.
2. Scholarship to help pay for college.
3. A plan of study to maximize their impact in the world.

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS

  • Founding Class scored in Top 3% on state test, nominated for State Charter School of the Year: 2012-13.
  • National Reward School for exemplary growth and achievement with children in poverty: 2013-14.
  • 1.7 years of academic growth per academic year: 2014-15, 2015-16.
  • A-rated school every year.
  • Growing impact in community, from 75 scholars to 640 scholars in 4 years.
  • What will you contribute to our culture of achievement?

REAL WORLD APPLICATION

How do we combat homelessness? What is needed to colonize the moon? Given current events and lessons from past wars, what should be our national security policy?

Teachers frame their units around questions like these that scholars solve over 1-2 months. Engaging in this problem-based learning allows scholars to collaborate with one another, use technology, work independently, deepen critical thinking skills, and connect to the community to present their findings.

During their senior year, scholars will engage in a year-long project that applies their gifts, interests, and intended area of study in college to positively benefit their community.

TECHNOLOGY

Every child at Empower College Prep receives a laptop device. Using technology enhances face-to-face learning and increases engagement. Scholars develop deeper intrinsic motivation for their learning. Empowering self-motivated learners with 21st Century skills and tools increases scholar achievement now and prepares them for success in college and careers in the future.

| Technology allows scholars to

  • learn at their own pace.
  • explore answers to questions.
  • produce work aligned to the requirements of the 21st Century workforce.

| Teachers use technology to

  • record lessons and lectures for scholars to review at their own pace.
  • differentiate practice.
  • increase the time they are facilitating critical thinking and collaborative discussions from the information scholars learn independently.

COLLEGE TRIPS

Every grade at Empower College Prep tours a university every year. Scholars earn these trips similarly to how they must work hard to go to college. These trips make the goal of college more immediate and the dream of college more real for our scholars who will be first-generation college graduates.

These trips include:

  • 3rd and 4th Grade: Arizona State University (Tempe, Arizona)
  • 5th Grade: University of Arizona (Tucson, Arizona)
  • 6th Grade: Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, Arizona)
  • 7th Grade: Stanford University (Stanford, California)
  • 8th Grade: Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, Arizona)
  • 9th Grade: Georgetown University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, American University (Washington D.C.)
